GEO vs SEO: What Is the Difference?
How generative engine optimisation and classic SEO differ, where they overlap, and why most brands now need both.

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
The difference is the destination. SEO gets your page ranked in a list a person then clicks. GEO gets your brand named and quoted inside an AI-generated answer, where there may be no list and no click at all.
SEO optimises a page for a search engine. GEO optimises your wider presence for an answer engine such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews. The two share a foundation, a fast, crawlable, trustworthy site, but they win in different places.
A quick analogy. SEO is getting your shop onto the high street where people browse the window displays. GEO is getting the local guide to recommend your shop by name, before the shopper has even decided to set off.
Why does the difference matter now?
It matters because the click is disappearing. More searches now end inside an AI answer, so a top ranking no longer guarantees a visit. Three figures frame the shift.
68% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026 (SparkToro with Similarweb).
When an AI Overview appears, the top organic result loses about 58% of its clicks (Ahrefs).
Google now shows an AI summary on roughly half of all searches, a share McKinsey expects to pass 75% by 2028.
Being named in the answer also pays off directly: brands cited inside an AI Overview earned about 35% higher organic click-through than uncited brands on the same queries (Seer Interactive). Ranking first still matters. It just no longer finishes the job on its own.
Is GEO just SEO with a new name?
No. They share fundamentals, clear structure, real expertise and a crawlable site, but they are measured differently and won on different signals. SEO is judged by rank and clicks. GEO is judged by citations, by mentions, and by how accurately the AI describes you.
The term is not marketing spin either. GEO comes from a 2023 Princeton-led research paper, later presented at ACM SIGKDD 2024, which built a benchmark of 10,000 queries and measured what actually lifts visibility in AI answers. The strongest levers were adding relevant statistics, quoting credible sources and citing references, together lifting a page by up to about 40%. Keyword density barely moved the needle.
How do GEO and SEO compare?
GEO and SEO win different things and are measured in different units. The table sets them side by side.
Traditional SEO
GEO
What you win
A rank in a list of links
A named mention inside the AI answer
The unit
The page
The brand, across the whole web the AI reads
The main signals
Keywords, backlinks, page authority
Clarity, structure, expertise, statistics, cited sources
The metric
Impressions and clicks
Citations, mentions, sentiment, share of answer
Where you appear
The results page
Inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews
The goal
Traffic to your site
Being the source the AI trusts and names
SEO wins the click. GEO wins the recommendation. Do the SEO groundwork so engines can read you, then layer GEO so the answer names you the way you want.
Do you need both GEO and SEO?
Yes, for almost every brand. SEO still wins the branded and transactional searches AI rarely touches, and a crawlable, authoritative site is the raw material GEO depends on. GEO then captures the growing share of research that now ends inside an AI answer. Drop either one and you leave a gap a competitor will fill.
There is also an opening for smaller brands. The Princeton study found the biggest visibility gains went to pages that were not already ranking highly, so a focused, well-structured, well-sourced page can outperform a larger rival that has not adapted. You do not need the biggest site. You need the clearest, most quotable one.
Part of What is GEO?.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO earns a rank in a list of links and is measured by clicks. GEO earns a named mention inside an AI answer and is measured by citations and mentions. They share fundamentals like clear structure and real expertise, but they target different surfaces.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Good SEO still feeds AI systems and still wins the branded and transactional searches AI rarely touches. GEO runs alongside it. You need both, in that order: SEO first, then GEO.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
Almost. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the same discipline with a narrower emphasis on being quoted in the answer. In everyday use GEO and AEO overlap heavily and many teams treat them as one practice under the umbrella term AI visibility.
Which is easier to rank for, GEO or SEO?
It depends on the term, but GEO often shows movement faster because AI systems reward fresh, well-structured, well-sourced content quickly. Classic SEO on competitive head terms can take far longer to build the authority a rank needs.
How do I measure GEO versus SEO?
SEO is measured in Google Search Console and GA4 by rank, impressions and clicks. GEO is measured by tracking citations and mentions across each AI engine over time, which standard SEO analytics do not show. The fastest way to see where you stand today is to run an AI visibility check.
Should a small business bother with GEO?
Yes. The research suggests smaller brands gain the most, because the largest visibility lifts went to pages that were not already ranking. A focused, well-sourced page can outperform a bigger rival that has not adapted.
