What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)?

The practice of getting your brand named inside AI answers, and how it differs from the SEO you already know.

What is AEO in plain terms?

AEO is the discipline of being the name an AI says out loud when a buyer asks it a question. Picture an AI as a well-read friend people now ask for recommendations. Old-style SEO is being in the directory they could flick through. AEO is being the name they say without looking anything up. When a buyer asks an AI for the best option in your category, you are either in that answer or you are not in the running.

Why does AEO matter now?

AEO matters now because your buyers have already moved, and most brands are not watching. Five numbers frame the shift.

ChatGPT reached about 900 million weekly active users in early 2026 and passed one billion monthly users by mid-2026. AI answers are mainstream, not a fringe channel.

Google now shows an AI summary on roughly half of all searches, a figure McKinsey expects to pass 75% by 2028.

68% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026 (SparkToro with Similarweb). The answer increasingly is the destination.

When an AI summary appears, the top organic result loses about 58% of its clicks (Ahrefs). Ranking first no longer guarantees traffic.

Only 16% of brands track how they show up in AI answers (McKinsey). The other 84% are flying blind.

The gap is the opportunity. In a category where most brands are not measuring, the ones that start now become the cited default for years.

How does AEO actually work?

AEO works through four content-level moves, and none of them is a trick.

Answer the question first. Open every important page with a direct, factual answer to the question it addresses, with no long wind-up. AI systems lift the clearest passage they can find, so put it first.

Structure it so a machine can read it. Use question-shaped headings, short paragraphs, schema markup, and a clear statement of who you are and what you do.

Show real expertise. Name your authors, show their credentials, date your pages, and cite your sources. AI systems weight fact density and trust signals, not marketing polish.

Show up beyond your own site. McKinsey found a brand’s own website is only 5 to 10% of the sources an AI draws on, and earned media drives the large majority of AI citations (Muck Rack, 2026). What others say about you matters as much as your homepage.

These four moves are the heart of the wider method we set out in how to do GEO.

How is AEO different from SEO?

AEO and SEO win different things. SEO earns a rank in a list of links; AEO earns a named mention inside the AI answer. The table sets them side by side, and we go deeper on the GEO side of the comparison in GEO vs SEO.

Traditional SEO

AEO

What you win

A rank in a list of links

A named mention inside the AI answer

The unit

The page

The brand, across the whole web

The signal

Keywords, backlinks, page authority

Clarity, structure, expertise, third-party mentions

The metric

Impressions and clicks

Citations, mentions, sentiment, share of answer

The goal

Traffic to your site

Being the source the AI trusts and names

AEO is about being quoted. GEO, its close cousin, is about what the AI says when it quotes you. You need both.

Where does AEO sit in the bigger picture?

AEO is the entry point to the wider discipline of AI visibility. It gets you into the answer; GEO shapes how you are described once you are there; and being cited well depends on the mechanics we cover in how LLMs choose citations. If you want the strategic overview, the generative engine optimisation hub ties it all together.

Part of What is GEO?.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Almost. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the same discipline with a different emphasis: how the AI writes and frames its answer once it decides to quote you. In day-to-day use the two overlap heavily and share the same fundamentals, and many teams treat them as one practice under the umbrella term AI visibility.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Good SEO still feeds AI systems and still wins the branded and transactional searches AI rarely touches. AEO runs alongside it; you need both.

Which engines does AEO apply to?

The major answer and generative engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Claude, among others.

How do I know if my AEO is working?

You measure citations and mentions across each engine over time, not clicks. The fastest way to see where you stand today is to run an AI visibility check.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Often faster than classic SEO, because AI systems reward fresh, well-structured content quickly. Expect a first read in days and meaningful movement over one to two quarters of consistent work.

How does GOAT Elevate help with AEO?

It runs the whole loop. It audits how AI describes you today, co-writes the structured content engines need, routes it through your team’s approval, publishes it, and tracks every citation across every engine. Nothing goes live until you say so.
