Tracking Brand Mentions Across AI: A Practical Guide

How to monitor where and how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews mention your brand, engine by engine, on a cadence.

What does it mean to track brand mentions across AI?

It means treating your presence in AI answers as something you measure on purpose, not something you spot-check. A brand mention is any point where an engine names, quotes or links you in its answer to a buyer’s question. Tracking them is the discipline of watching those mentions systematically, across engines and over time.

This is the monitoring half of AI visibility. It is deliberately narrower than reputation management: the job here is to see clearly what the engines say, count it, and read it. What you then do about a mention you dislike is a separate step, which we come back to below.

Why track mentions across several engines, not one?

Because the engines disagree with each other, and they change their minds. Each one draws on different sources and weights them differently, so being cited confidently in ChatGPT tells you little about how you fare in Perplexity or Gemini. Watching only one gives you a partial and possibly flattering view.

They are also unstable over time. The same prompt can return different sources from one week to the next as the engines adjust how they retrieve and rank content.

Citation shares can move sharply within weeks: Semrush observed large swings in ChatGPT’s share of citations to sources such as Reddit across a single month of tracking.

The lesson is to track several engines on a cadence, so you see the real, moving picture rather than one lucky or unlucky snapshot. That volatility figure is vendor tracking, so read it as illustrative of the instability rather than a fixed benchmark.

What exactly should you track?

The same few fields, every time, for every prompt and engine. Consistency is what turns scattered checks into data you can compare.

Frequently asked questions

How do I monitor ChatGPT mentions of my brand?

Build a set of the questions your buyers ask about your category, put them to ChatGPT on a regular schedule, and record for each whether you are mentioned, how prominently, and which sources it cites. Doing it consistently over time, rather than once, is what turns it into monitoring.

How often should I check my AI brand mentions?

On a regular cadence, weekly or monthly, using the same prompt set each time. AI answers shift over time, so a fixed schedule lets you compare like with like and read the trend, which matters far more than any single check.

Should I track manually or with a tool?

Start manually to learn what good and bad look like for your category and to set a baseline, then move to a dedicated tool once you want to track many prompts and engines consistently. Manual is fine to begin; a tool wins on scale and consistency.

What is the difference between mention tracking and reputation management?

Mention tracking is monitoring: counting and reading how AI engines cite you. Reputation management is responding: judging whether a description is fair and acting to correct a wrong or damaging one. Tracking makes reputation visible; managing it is the separate next step.

Which engines should I monitor?

The ones your buyers use most, which for most UK brands means ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews. Because the engines cite differently and change over time, tracking several gives a truer picture than watching any one alone.

What do I do with the mentions I find?

Turn them into a plan. The prompts where a competitor is named and you are not become the brief for your content and off-site work, and the raw counts become your share of answer, which tells you where to focus next.

Sources

  1. Which pages and domains the engine used, yours and others
  2. Competitors named
  3. Which rivals appear, and how prominently
  4. Prompt and engine
  5. Which question, on which engine, on which date
  6. How do you track brand mentions, step by step?
  7. The method is simple to run and easy to keep consistent once it is set up.
  8. Build a prompt set. List the real questions buyers ask about your category, thirty to fifty to begin with, phrased the way people actually ask.
  9. Choose your engines. Cover the ones your buyers use: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews for most UK brands.
  10. Run the set on a cadence. Put the same prompts to each engine on a regular schedule, weekly or monthly, so results are comparable over time.
  11. Record the same fields every time. Capture the fields in the table above for each prompt and engine, so nothing is left to memory.
  12. Read the trend, not the snapshot. Look at how your mentions and share of answer move over successive runs, and treat one-off spikes and dips as noise until they persist.
  13. Should you track manually or with a tool?
  14. Start manually, scale with a tool. Running a modest prompt set by hand is the best way to learn what good and bad look like for your category, and it is enough to establish a baseline. Once you want to track many prompts across several engines on a tight cadence, doing it by hand becomes impractical, and a dedicated AI-visibility tool pays for itself in consistency and time saved.
